In recent years there has been a lively interest in film and literature in the themes of labour, social class and politics. At the same time, social science research on these topics has experienced an upswing. The conference „Work – Social Class – Politics – Film“ organised by the artistic-research project „Building Bridges“ (co-project lead Barbara Wolfram & Paulus Wagner) at the Film Academy Vienna on 29 and 30 April 2024 aims to stimulate an exchange across media and subject boundaries. Austrian and international film and literature experts as well as social scientists have been invited as speakers. Cinematic and literary works, which deal with the topics of social class, labour and politics in different focal points, refer to social science research and vice versa, sometimes directly and knowingly, sometimes indirectly and coincidentally. Film talks, readings, academic lectures as well as panel discussions and public Q&As are intended to provide the most diverse access possible and create a broad space for discussion and exchange.

Among the speakers are leading voices in the respective discourse such as Ken Loach & Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake; Sorry we missed you; The Old Oak), Michèle Lamont (Harvard University, The Dignity of Working Men, Seeing Others), Didier Eribon (Return to Reims, A Worker) and Jean-Gabriel Périot (film version Retour à Reims (Fragments)) as well as Stéphane Brizé (Strike, The Measure of a Man). From the German-speaking world, Annika Pinske (Alle reden übers Wetter), Ulli Gladik (Inland) and Elke Groen (Der schönste Platz auf Erden) will discuss their cinematic work.From the social science side, Lisa McKenzie (University of Bedfordshire, Getting By; „It`s not ideal„), Benoit Coquard (INSAE,Those, who stay) and Andre Schmidt (University of Leipzig, The world of labour and democracy in East Germany) will also present their research.Caroline Suh (Netflix series: Working: What We Do All Day with Barack Obama) will contribute another important perspective from the US.

Under the motto “Silenced Care”, film works of various forms and genres explore the often overheard world of care work and shed light on the experiences of people who migrate or have to migrate because of their work. The directors tell the stories of different people from different parts of the world who raise their voices and insist on the right to be seen and heard.

Unter dem Motto „Silenced Care“ erkunden filmische Arbeiten unterschiedlicher Formen und Genres die oft überhörte Welt der Care-Arbeit und beleuchten die Erfahrungen von Menschen, die aufgrund ihrer Arbeit migrieren oder migrieren müssen. Die Regisseur*innen erzählen Geschichten von unterschiedlichen Menschen aus verschiedenen Teilen der Erde, die ihre Stimme erheben und auf das Recht pochen, gesehen und gehört zu werden.

Autosoziobiografisches Erzählen verknüpft das Persönliche mit dem Politischen und Gesellschaftlichen und insistiert auf der Bedeutung von Klasse und Herkunft. Es hat gegenwärtig nicht nur auf dem Buchmarkt Erfolg, sondern ist auch, vor allem innerhalb der Philologien und der Soziologie, zum viel diskutierten Forschungsgegenstand avanciert. Hieran anschließend fragt das künstlerisch-wissenschaftliche Forschungsprojekt „Confronting Realities. Arbeit an filmischen Autosoziobiografien“ in seinem zweiten Symposium nach der Intermedialität autosoziobiografischer Erzählweisen in der Literatur, im Theater und im Film. In Vorträgen, Lecture Performances, Filmscreenings und -gesprächen untersucht das Symposium autosoziobiografische Erzählweisen anhand ihrer medialen Brüche und Verknüpfungen – zwischen Schrift und Fotografie, zwischen Stimme und Bild, zwischen Körper, Bühne und Leinwand. Dabei geht es stets auch um die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von wissenschaftlich-theoretischen und künstlerisch-praktischen Forschungsperspektiven: Welche Funken und Friktionen können aus ihrer Begegnung entstehen?

I am very happy to have received the HERTA & KURT BLAUKOPF AWARD 2024 for my PhD research about “The Presentation and Representation of Gender and Diversity in Austrian Feature Films from 1997 to 2017.”
The prize is awarded to the three best dissertations at mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna over all disciplines every two years.

I am very excited to have been awarded with the AWARD OF EXCELLENCE 2023 for my PhD research about “The Presentation and Representation of Gender and Diversity in Austrian Feature Films from 1997 to 2017.”
The prize is awarded to the 40 best dissertations in Austria over all disciplines for that year.
